CSME OVERVIEW
WHAT IS THE CSME?
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Single Market and Economy (CSME) is an economic arrangement that will allow CARICOM goods, services, people and capital to move throughout CARICOM without tariffs and restrictions to achieve a single economic space, with the aim to further harmonise economic, monetary and fiscal policies and measures across all Member States of CARICOM.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF THE CSME?
One of the important benefits of the creation of a CSME for CARICOM’s 6 million inhabitants is the right to move freely.
Trinidad and Tobago passed the Immigration (Caribbean Community Skilled Nationals) Act of 1996 that provided for the issuance of Certificates of Recognition to University Graduates to allow them to move without restriction in and out of Trinidad and Tobago. In June 2003, that Act was amended to add the four (4) additional categories – media workers, sportspersons, artistes and musicians.
WHO CAN APPLY FOR A CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION?
All nationals of CARICOM Member States can apply for a Certificate of Recognition under any of the five (5) categories referred to above.
HOW DOES ONE APPLY FOR A CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION?
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago is the agency charged with receiving and processing applications for the Certificate of Recognition. Application forms may be obtained at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any of the Trinidad and Tobago Overseas Missions.
