PORT OF SPAIN: AUGUST 15TH 2017

The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs hosted the Signing Ceremony for the Framework Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Government of the People’s Republic of China Concerning the Provision of a Concessional Loan for the Acquisition of a Multi-Purpose Patrol Vessel from the Government of the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday 9 August, 2017. Senator the Honourable Dennis Moses, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, signed the Framework Agreement on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and His Excellency Song Yumin, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, for the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

The signing of the Framework Agreement set the foundation for the finalisation of a Concessional Loan Agreement in relation to a multipurpose vessel for the use by the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (Coast Guard). The Honourable Major General (Ret'd) Edmund Dillon, Minister of National Security, in his statement at the Ceremony, informed that the vessel, now named TTS Nelson II, is a worthwhile addition to the military's fleet, particularly given the increased focus on the protection of the country's maritime borders.

In their statements, both Minister Moses and Ambassador Song agreed that the conclusion of the Framework Agreement was a milestone in the longstanding relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and China and expressed their commitment to advancing cooperation in security and other areas for the mutual benefit of both countries.
