Trinidad and Tobago Elected to The United Nations Security Council

Under the strategic leadership of the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar S.C., Prime Minister, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone by securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term.

In order to secure a seat on the UNSC, Trinidad and Tobago was required to secure the support of a two-thirds majority of UN Member States (approximately 129 countries). Earlier this morning, Trinidad and Tobago secured the votes of 181 countries out of 191 countries (95%) in one round of voting, including from all five Permanent Members of the Council (United States, United Kingdom, France, China and Russia).

This country’s campaign was launched by the Prime Minister during her participation at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in September 2025. Since then, the Prime Minister has been in constant contact and personal dialogue with several world leaders to advance the country’s bid. Therefore, this country’s success is a testament to the vision, dedication, and steadfast leadership of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, whose commitment to advancing Trinidad and Tobago’s interests internationally has helped secure this historic victory.

The theme for Trinidad and Tobago’s UNSC campaign was “Building Consensus for the Realization of Sustainable Peace and Security” and the country’s campaign was focused around three (3) strategic pillars:

I. Curbing the Illicit Trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons;

II. Women and Children, Peace and Security and;

III. Artificial Intelligence and Global Security.

The Security Council is the most prestigious and powerful body in the United Nations system and is charged primarily with the responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security and all Member States are obligated to comply with its decisions.

Today’s achievement demonstrates what can be achieved through strong leadership, effective diplomacy, and a clear commitment to representing the people of Trinidad and Tobago on the global stage. The seat on the UNSC will elevate our nation’s voice on the international stage, providing Trinidad and Tobago with a greater opportunity to contribute to discussions on global peace, security, development, and international cooperation. It will also strengthen our country’s diplomatic standing, enhance our influence within the international community, and open new avenues for strategic partnerships and engagement with the rest of the world.
