FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS MINISTER CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL VISIT TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister, the Honourable Sean Sobers has concluded a successful visit to Washington, D.C. after holding bilateral discussions with senior officials of the Federal Government in the United States of America. During the period 13th-15th May 2026, the Honourable Minister met with top officials of the following departments:

• The Department of State;

• The Office of the United States Trade Representative;

• The Department of Energy;

• The Department of War; and

• National Security Council

Discussions focused on matters relating to foreign policy; energy security; national security; and international trade, and built on previous bilateral discussions between both countries spearheaded by the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar S.C., Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago most recently at the Shield of Americas Summit in Miami in March 2026 which was hosted by United States President, Donald Trump.

On Wednesday 13th May 2026, Minister Sobers met with Senior Officials of the United States Department of Energy and National Security Council (NSC) at the White House Complex and discussions focused on the important role that Trinidad and Tobago plays in strengthening global supply chain security for the USA. The Trinidad and Tobago delegation also held bilateral discussions with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on this date.

On 14th May 2026, Minister Sobers met with Mr. Joseph Humire, Assistant Secretary of War, at the Pentagon where discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between the United States of America and Trinidad and Tobago, specifically regarding critical matters of defence and security cooperation.

On Friday 15th May 2026, Minister Sobers met with United States Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau at the State Department. The Deputy Secretary thanked Trinidad and Tobago for its leadership role in the Americas in promoting hemispheric peace and prosperity and expressed the gratitude of the United States Government for the leadership of Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar in the fight against transnational crime in the Region. Deputy Secretary Landau noted that the relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America is now at the highest level in decades and vowed to continue deep cooperation with this country on matters of mutual economic and security interests.

These high-level talks in Washington, D.C. served to enhance mutual coordination and reinforce the longstanding partnership between both nations in maintaining regional stability and also advanced several matters of strategic importance to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Honourable Sean Sobers, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs was accompanied by Mr. Randall Karim, Permanent Secretary and Head of the Foreign Service and Officials of the Trinidad and Tobago Embassy in Washington, D.C.
