INTRODUCTORY COURTESY CALL BETWEEN THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS AND HIS EXCELLENCY GUSTAVO MARTÍNEZ PANDIANI, AMBASSADOR OF THE ARGENTINE REPUBLIC

The Honourable Sean Sobers, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, welcomed His Excellency Gustavo Martínez Pandiani, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic, for an introductory courtesy call on 10th June, 2025, reaffirming the enduring diplomatic and economic partnership between Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina. The meeting highlighted the mutual commitment of both nations to advancing cooperation in areas that contribute to national development and regional stability.

Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina share a long-standing relationship built on trust and shared priorities. Over the years, this partnership has fostered collaboration in critical sectors such as disaster preparedness, science and technology, meteorology and food production. The strong foundation of cooperation, particularly in areas like phytosanitary and animal health standards, reflects both countries’ dedication to ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and food security. Argentina’s expertise in these fields continues to provide invaluable support as Trinidad and Tobago seeks to strengthen its resilience against environmental and economic challenges.

Through South-South cooperation, Argentina has played a key role in advancing technical assistance across the Caribbean, including initiatives aimed at enhancing employment policies and fostering workforce development. The longstanding exchange of knowledge and resources has been instrumental in supporting Trinidad and Tobago’s labour sector and broader economic agenda. Furthermore, Argentina’s engagement in sports diplomacy through youth football coaching programmes exemplifies the potential for collaboration beyond traditional diplomatic spheres, reinforcing cultural ties and opportunities for skill development.

Trade remains a cornerstone of the Trinidad and Tobago–Argentina relationship, with both countries benefiting from a diverse exchange of goods. Liquefied natural gas (LNG), diesel oil, and urea from Trinidad and Tobago continue to be vital exports, while Argentina contributes refined soya bean oil, dried chickpeas, diesel vehicles, and medication, supporting key industries and consumer needs. The positive balance of trade recorded in 2023 and 2024 underscores the potential for growth, with both nations exploring avenues for expanding agricultural exports and strengthening commercial linkages.

The engagement between Minister Sobers and Ambassador Pandiani reaffirms the significance of the bilateral relationship and the shared commitment to deepening cooperation. Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina remain steadfast in their pursuit of diplomatic and economic initiatives that not only benefit their respective nations but also contribute to regional stability and sustainable development.
