MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS HOLDS INTRODUCTORY COURTESY CALL WITH GERMAN AMBASSADOR

The Honourable Sean Sobers, M.P., Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, held his Introductory Courtesy Call with His Excellency Dr. Christophe Eick, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Trinidad and Tobago at the Ministry’s headquarters on 4th June, 2025. The meeting reaffirmed the strong diplomatic relationship between both nations, which has been maintained at the ambassadorial level since 1962. Germany’s diplomatic presence in Port of Spain also facilitates broader engagement with CARICOM, underscoring Germany’s commitment to regional collaboration.

Technical cooperation remains a cornerstone of Trinidad and Tobago–Germany relations, with Germany consistently supporting capacity-building initiatives through leadership seminars, diplomatic training, and development projects. Notable efforts include the donation of security equipment to the Immigration Division of the then Ministry of National Security and long-standing collaborations such as the Chaguaramas Agricultural Development Project and the University of the West Indies’ partnership with the University of Flensburg on sustainable energy research.

Germany has also played a pivotal role in environmental and climate-related initiatives. Through the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance (REETA) Project and its Climate Change Fund, Germany continues to support Trinidad and Tobago’s sustainability efforts. The German Embassy has additionally backed projects such as the Green Screen Film Festival and climate outreach programmes, reinforcing its commitment to environmental advocacy within the region.

Beyond bilateral cooperation, Germany’s presence in Trinidad and Tobago enhances engagement with CARICOM Member States, with the Embassy overseeing German-led programmes across the region. These efforts include funding for climate resilience, natural resource management, and HIV/AIDS prevention projects. Furthermore, Germany’s recent Memorandum of Understanding with CARICOM signals continued collaboration on renewable energy, food security, and sustainable development.

Trinidad and Tobago remains committed to further strengthening ties with Germany, particularly in trade, investment and multilateral cooperation. As diplomatic discussions progress, both nations will continue to explore opportunities for expanded collaboration that align with shared interests in economic development, environmental sustainability and institutional capacity building.
