Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, the Honourable Sean Sobers, will today represent Trinidad and Tobago at a Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism, hosted by the United States Secretary of State, the Honourable Marco Rubio, in Washington, D.C.
Trinidad and Tobago is among the select nations invited to participate in high-level discussions to strengthen international cooperation to address emerging threats posed by politically motivated terrorism.
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago recognises that terrorism, extremism and politically motivated violence pose significant threats to democratic institutions, public safety and economic stability. It remains committed to working with regional and international partners to enhance security cooperation, information sharing and collective action against transnational threats.
The Ministerial will focus on the renewed threat posed by political terrorism and seek to encourage stronger joint action to reinforce frontline defences and close the gaps that terrorist actors continue to exploit. This is particularly important, as far-left political terrorism has re-emerged in recent years, manifesting in violent acts across the Western Hemisphere, Europe, Asia and other regions of the world. This threat has often remained under-recognised and under-resourced within the international counterterrorism framework, despite the risks it poses to societies worldwide.
During the Meeting, Secretary Rubio is expected to emphasise the need for deeper cooperation among international partners to map violent activity more effectively, disrupt terrorist financing, protect critical infrastructure and promote collective action against a threat that recognises no borders. The Ministerial will therefore bring together partners from across the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Asia to expand coordination, enhance information sharing and strengthen international law enforcement mechanisms.
On behalf of the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, S.C., Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Minister Sobers expressed sincere appreciation to Secretary Rubio and the Government of the United States for the invitation and the opportunity to collaborate with international partners on this critical issue affecting the global community.
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago looks forward to contributing constructively to these discussions and reaffirming its commitment to international cooperation to promote peace, security and democratic stability.
