Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar leads Trinidad and Tobago's Diplomatic engagements to strengthen global partnerships at UN high-level week

The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, S.C., Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, spearheaded a series of high-level engagements on 26th September, 2025, as part of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. These activities built upon the momentum established earlier in the week by the Honourable Sean Sobers, M.P., Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, and Mr. Nicholas Morris, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister and in the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Minister Sobers, Parliamentary Secretary Morris other Cabinet Ministers and senior Officials of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

In a bilateral meeting with His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait, the delegation explored the start of negotiations for a suite of bilateral agreements, with a focus on expanding cooperation in energy, trade and investment. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Trinidad and Tobago and Kuwait, recognizing the potential for collaboration in areas such as energy security and capacity-building that would result in mutual economic and developmental benefits. The meeting also underscored the commitment of Trinidad and Tobago to strengthening ties with Kuwait and enhancing collaboration between the Caribbean and the Gulf region. The Prime Minister also held a bilateral meeting with His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During this engagement, the Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs signed a landmark Visa Exemption Agreement with his counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE, a milestone that would facilitate easier travel for nationals of both countries (starting with Diplomatic and Official passport holders and thereafter extending to holders of Ordinary Passports), stimulate business and tourism and create new avenues for cultural and economic exchange. This Agreement marks a significant step toward a more dynamic partnership between Trinidad and Tobago and the UAE geared at attracting increased investment and business from the latter.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister addressed the United Nations General Assembly, delivering Trinidad and Tobago’s national statement, the centrepiece of the country’s participation during the High-Level Week. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of Trinidad and Tobago to, inter alia, multilateralism; international peace; and security; the rights of women and girls; and sustainable development. Trinidad and Tobago also reiterated its support for the US military presence in the southern Caribbean, which has been very effective in inhibiting the innumerable activities of drug cartels within our country. The Prime Minister also announced the candidature of Trinidad and Tobago for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the period 2027-2028.

Following her address, the Prime Minister met with Trinidad and Tobago nationals serving in various capacities at the United Nations and expressed appreciation for their contributions to the Organization. The Prime Minister also visited the Permanent Mission of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, where she commended staff for their dedication.

These High-Level engagements underscore Trinidad and Tobago’s determination to strengthen bilateral and multilateral partnerships that support national development and elevate the country’s voice in the international arena.

On 27th September, 2025, the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar S.C., Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, continued to lead the country’s delegation in advancing key international partnerships and fostering diplomatic engagement.

First on the Prime Minister’s agenda was a bilateral meeting with His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Prime Minister engaged the Secretary-General on key global issues including crime and security, the advancement of women and girls, climate change and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence. The meeting served to reinforce Trinidad and Tobago’s engagement with the United Nations and set the tone for the country’s engagement with the Organization going forward.

The Honourable Sean Sobers M.P., Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, also led significant diplomatic initiatives. Minister Sobers and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs and Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Nicholas Morris held bilateral talks with His Excellency Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda, focusing on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties, enhancing trade and investment opportunities and exploring potential areas of bilateral and multilateral collaboration. These discussions culminated in the signing of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Trinidad and Tobago and Rwanda, aimed at enhancing air connectivity, trade and tourism between the two countries.

Trinidad and Tobago also formalized the establishment of diplomatic relations with Tunisia, marked by the signing of a Joint Communiqué between Minister Sobers and His Excellency Mohamed Ali Nafti, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia. This step paves the way for strengthened ties with Trinidad and Tobago’s and North Africa and opening new avenues for bilateral cooperation.

The day concluded with the Trinidad and Tobago delegation attending a Celebration Service in commemoration of Republic Day, with the Prime Minister as the guest of honour.

These engagements reflect Trinidad and Tobago’s proactive diplomacy in building strategic partnerships, expanding international connectivity and celebrating national identity abroad.
