STATEMENT DELIVERED BY THE HONOURABLE DAVID LEE, M.P., MINISTER OF HOUSING AT THE RECEPTION IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 77TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA HYATT REGENCY HOTEL - FRIDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2026

I join with you at this evening’s reception to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China. I stand in the stead of the Honourable Sean Sobers, the Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, who is currently participating in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

It is therefore with great pleasure that I take this opportunity to extend congratulations to the Government of the People’s Republic of China on this most auspicious occasion.

For the Chinese people and, as you know, I am of Chinese heritage, October 1, 1949, marked the culmination of a long period of revolutionary struggle, while simultaneously ushering in an era of national rejuvenation. Creditably, from that historic period onward, the Chinese people have successfully navigated founding a nation based on the twin ideals of preservation of a Civilisation – which retains ancient, hallmark traditions – while also embracing significant transformation, in a spirit of collective purpose and resolve. This is largely attributable to its rise in stature, with widespread recognition as being a leading, modern economic power on the international stage.

Additionally, this year marks a milestone in the shared history between our countries – the 220th anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese migrants in Trinidad and Tobago. It is without question that the myriad cultural artforms, cuisine and industrious spirit of the Chinese people have weaved a delicate tapestry into our society.

In this vein, permit me to elaborate on, an indelible mark of Chinese integration in our twin-island Republic, that of our cuisine. Undoubtedly, such cuisine is reflected in our Culinary Festivals and, in our palette. Indeed, Chinese food establishments have become an enduring sketch in our urban landscapes and are acknowledged as being an intrinsic feature of our multi-ethnic Trinbagonian society.

I take this opportunity therefore, to acknowledge the significant contributions made by those of Chinese heritage, in the cultural diversity and development of Trinidad and Tobago.

Many years after those first linkages, when our two (2) countries established diplomatic relations in 1974, it was an acknowledgement that there is only One China in the world, a position that was endorsed by the United Nations three (3) years earlier. Today, I stand before you, I unreservedly declare that, that position has not changed and, as such, I reaffirm the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’s unwavering commitment to the One-China Policy.

Although that Policy provided the initial basis for official engagement, Trinidad and Tobago and China have since built on that foundation by fostering mutual understanding and trust. This has required consistent and intentional engagement. In this context, Minister Sobers met with his Chinese counterpart, His Excellency Wang Yi, for their first in-person engagement in New York earlier this year.

Driven by the pursuit of common objectives, our two (2) countries have significantly expanded our cooperation, making China a valued partner in the sustainable development of Trinidad and Tobago. This year, proposals were made to advance the use of a RMB 100 million aid grant provided by the Chinese Government, under an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement between our countries.

The newly constructed Central Block of the Port of Spain General Hospital and terminal building at the A.N.R. Robinson International Airport were both completed by the China Railway Construction Caribbean Company Limited and officially handed over to the respective Ministries earlier this year.

Moreover, we acknowledge partnerships undertaken between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for the construction of edifices, which have become renowned as much for their remarkable contemporary architectural design, as for their functionality.

A Memorandum of Understanding between our countries offers opportunities for the development of our most important resource, our people. As I speak, over fifteen (15) nationals of Trinidad and Tobago are in China for short-term training and degree programmes, each being sponsored by the Chinese Government.

Our trading relationship has grown significantly, with China ranked as Trinidad and Tobago’s second largest import partner and eighth largest export destination in 2025. It should be recalled that, the Honourable Jearlean John, Minister of Works and Infrastructure visited China in January this year, in order to attract Chinese investment for projects under the Government’s Revitalisation Blueprint, thereby taking advantage of our strong economic ties.

In addition to our bilateral cooperation, Trinidad and Tobago and China have maintained their commitment to dialogue and collaboration within regional and multilateral fora. In this regard, a unique opportunity awaits when Trinidad and Tobago begins its 2027-2028 term on the United Nations Security Council, on which China holds a permanent seat. I wish to again thank China for its support of Trinidad and Tobago’s successful candidature, as well as its offer of assistance to ensure our readiness to serve on this august body. Trinidad and Tobago looks forward to working with the Chinese Government, to achieve our joint vision for a more peaceful and secure world.

It is indeed fitting that, as we reminisce on the longstanding relationship of our Peoples, we can draw further inspiration from a cultural luminary who, despite being a daughter of our soil, has been a source of dual pride for our nations. In this regard, special dedication is being given today to Madame Dai Ailian, a figure renowned as the Mother of Chinese Dance and recognised, in particular, as being a pioneer in modern Chinese ballet. Noteworthy, is the fact that tribute will be paid to Madame Ailian in her hometown of Couva and that, a delegation from the Beijing Dance Academy, which she founded, is scheduled to visit Trinidad and Tobago next month.

Ambassador, the enduring partnership between our two (2) nations has redounded to our mutual benefit. In this regard, the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago will continue to work with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, to strengthen and expand this very important relationship.

May the People’s Republic of China continue to enjoy peace and prosperity on the 77th Anniversary of your Founding.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I thank you. Xie xie.
