STRENGHTHENING TIES BETWEEN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AND THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The Honourable Sean Sobers M.P., Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, welcomed Her Excellency Raquel J. Jacobo Jaar, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic, for a courtesy call at the Ministry’s headquarters on 3rd June, 2025. The engagement reaffirmed the longstanding diplomatic relations between Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic, which were formally established in May, 1968.

During the meeting, both parties underscored the depth of bilateral ties, particularly in trade and investment. Trinidad and Tobago continues to maintain a favourable balance of trade with the Dominican Republic, reflecting the strength of economic collaboration between the two nations. Discussions highlighted key trade dynamics, including major imports from the Dominican Republic such as plastics, beverages, fruit and nuts, iron and steel, tobacco, salt, paper and electrical machinery, as well as Trinidad and Tobago’s top exports, such as fertilisers, minerals, food preparations, plastics, chemicals and beverages.

Minister Sobers expressed appreciation for the continued commitment of Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic to strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation particularity in the areas of trade and tourism. He reiterated Trinidad and Tobago’s dedication to enhancing mutual prosperity through sustained dialogue and collaboration. Ambassador Jacobo Jaar likewise emphasised her country’s commitment to deepening engagement with Trinidad and Tobago, noting the potential for further cooperation in areas of trade, cultural exchange and regional partnership. Both countries will also soon sign an Air Services Agreement, which will facilitate air transportation connectivity.
