The Honourable Sean Sobers M.P., Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Mr.Nicholas Morris M.P., Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister and in the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, yesterday 22nd September, 2025, participated in a series of High-Level Meetings as the High-Level Week of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly commenced.
Minister Sobers began the day at the Ministerial Meeting of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), where the Secretary-General of the ACS outlined the Strategic Plan for 2025-2035, which set out key areas for regional cooperation over the next decade, including sustainable development, climate resilience, trade, transport and disaster risk management. Ministers also engaged in a dialogue with ACS Observer States to explore opportunities for collaboration and addressing common challenges across the Greater Caribbean.
Building on the day’s focus on regional cooperation, Minister Sobers next participated in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Foreign Ministers Meeting, where the Minister offered views on regional and global developments and discussed ways to strengthen dialogue and cooperation among Member States.
Minister Sobers delivered his inaugural address to the General Assembly at the High-Level Meeting marking the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, highlighting Trinidad and Tobago’s continued efforts to advance gender equality and empower women and girls in keeping with the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
Later, at the CARICOM Foreign Ministers Meeting (COFCOR), the Minister engaged in discussions on regional security, economic integration, including coordination of CARICOM candidatures for key multilateral bodies.
On the margins of these multilateral engagements, Minister Sobers held his first bilateral meeting with His Excellency Melvin W.J. Bouva, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and Cooperation of Suriname. The discussions focused on strengthening Trinidad and Tobago’s partnership with Suriname. Key areas of discussion included opportunities in the oil and gas sector, expanding trade relations and promoting cultural collaboration between the two States. The meeting underscored the commitment of Trinidad and Tobago to fostering regional partnerships and supporting the vision of CARICOM of a connected, prosperous and culturally vibrant region.
Parliamentary Secretary Morris also participated in several of the day’s meetings, reinforcing the country’s advocacy on key regional and global priorities. Key among these engagements were the Sustainable Development Goals Moment and the High-level Session for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.
Trinidad and Tobago will continue today with its full schedule of high-level engagements throughout the week, advancing the country’s commitment to multilateralism and the shared goals of peace, security and sustainable development.
