PORT OF SPAIN: 1ST OCTOBER 2025

The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago joined with the Republic of Chile in celebrating the 215th Anniversary of Chile’s Independence at a reception hosted at Queen’s Hall on 30th September, 2025.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, Senator the Honourable Dr. Kennedy Swaratsingh, Acting Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, extended congratulations to Chile on this significant milestone. He reflected on Chile’s proud history of independence and its enduring values of dignity, justice and unity.

The Acting Minister noted that Trinidad and Tobago and Chile have shared 62 years of diplomatic relations, strengthened through mutual respect, friendship, and cooperation. He highlighted the landmark signing of the Partial Scope Trade Agreement earlier this year, which represents a “first” for both nations, Chile’s first such agreement in the Caribbean and Trinidad and Tobago’s first with a South American partner. This Agreement expands market access, enhances trade opportunities, and underscores the two countries’ commitment to mutual prosperity.

Minister Swaratsingh further acknowledged the work of the Chilean International Cooperation Agency for Development (AGCID), which has provided valuable training opportunities for Trinidad and Tobago’s public sector officials in areas including diplomacy, disaster preparedness, and environmental management. He also noted Chile’s contribution to food safety collaboration and welcomed the upcoming trade mission of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) to Chile.

The Acting Minister praised Chile’s cultural outreach through initiatives such as the Embassy’s annual Wine Night and NALIS’ Latin Nights, underscoring the role of cultural exchange in strengthening bilateral ties. He also welcomed the evening’s performance by the renowned Folkloric Dance Company ANTUMAPU, drawing parallels between Chile’s storytelling traditions and Trinidad and Tobago’s Best Village Programme.

In closing, Minister Swaratsingh congratulated Chile on its achievements in areas such as technology, sustainability, and human development, affirming that both countries will continue to celebrate milestones together as diplomatic allies, partners in development, and friends.
