TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN BILATERAL AND MULTILATERAL TIES WITH THE KINGDOM OF SPAIN

The Honourable Sean Sobers M.P., Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs received Her Excellency María Cristina Pérez Gutiérrez, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain during an introductory courtesy call held on 12th June, 2025 at the Ministry’s headquarters.

During the meeting, Minister Sobers reiterated Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to deepening its fruitful bilateral relationship with the Kingdom of Spain, and expressed the interest of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago toward exploring areas for deepened bilateral cooperation in a number of areas, including national security, energy, transportation and infrastructure development, maritime cooperation, culture and sport.

A key feature of Trinidad and Tobago–Spain relations has been the enduring trade partnership between both countries. Spain has consistently ranked among Trinidad and Tobago’s top ten export destinations and within the top twenty-five import sources over the past five years. Trinidad and Tobago has generally maintained a net export position, with exports to Spain accounting for 3% of the country’s total global exports. In 2021, exports reached TT$1.25 billion—a 26% increase over the 2020 figure of TT$990 million. These exports were largely composed of liquefied natural gas, methanol and urea. Imports from Spain have remained relatively stable, amounting to TT$284 million in 2021, and comprising products such as iron and steel equipment, medicaments, ceramic tiles and virgin olive oil.

Minister Sobers and Ambassador Gutiérrez also reflected on the positive trajectory of multilateral cooperation between the two nations. Both countries continue to engage actively in international fora, building upon their shared values and commitment to multilateralism. In this regard, upcoming opportunities for collaboration at the multilateral level were discussed.

The discussions concluded on a cordial note, with both parties affirming their intent to explore new avenues for meaningful cooperation. The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Kingdom of Spain share a diplomatic relationship spanning 58 years, one rooted in mutual respect, shared values and a commitment to constructive engagement on bilateral and global issues.
