The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs is pleased to inform the national community that on June 1, 2023, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, His Excellency Dennis Francis, Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations was elected President of the General Assembly for the 78th session. The United Nations General Assembly 78th session will commence in September 2023 and will end in September 2024.
Ambassador Francis has had a career spanning approximately forty years in the Diplomatic Service of Trinidad and Tobago. He has served as Trinidad and Tobago’s High Commissioner to Jamaica, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Geneva, as well as Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization and to the UN Human Rights Council. He was also accredited concurrently to the U.N. Specialized Agencies in Vienna and Rome, besides having bilateral accreditation as Ambassador to Austria and Italy.
Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, who is currently in New York for the election emphasized when he addressed the General Assembly that “The Government of Trinidad and Tobago holds the firm view that our nation’s attributes will continue to add value, as one of our best and brightest will serve as the next President of the General Assembly. This is a position that we have never held before, and our campaign has underscored our unwavering commitment to the United Nations and to its founding principles.”
