PORT OF SPAIN: 9TH SEPTEMBER, 2016
On August 22, 2016, Her Excellency Penelope Beckles, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations presented her Letters of Credence to His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations.
During the ceremony Ambassador Beckles delivered a brief address to the audience which comprised other newly accredited Permanent Representatives and United Nations staff. She took the opportunity to recall His Excellency Ban Ki-moon’s visits to Trinidad and Tobago during the hosting of the Summit of the Americas and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in 2009. Ambassador Beckles also made reference to a few of the Secretary-General’s achievements, particularly his efforts, through advocacy, for measures to mitigate climate change which culminated in the adoption of the Paris Climate Change Agreement; the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda; the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development; the Arms Trade Treaty and his efforts aimed at revitalising the General Assembly.
In closing, Ambassador Beckles reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment as a responsible Member State that would continue to play its role in the implementation of major initiatives which our contribution helped to shape, in conjunction with the other Member States of the General Assembly.
