Senator the Honourable Dennis Moses, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs welcomed to Trinidad and Tobago State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, His Excellency Kentaro Sonoura during a Courtesy Call on 24th July, 2017 at the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.
During the Courtesy Call, discussions focussed on a number of key areas including, bilateral cooperation and the need to reform the United Nations Security Council.
On the topic of bilateral cooperation, both Minister Moses and Minister Sonoura reaffirmed the commitment of Trinidad and Tobago and Japan to forging deeper bilateral ties. Reflecting on the fact that both countries are islands and prone to natural disasters, Minister Sonoura indicated that Japan has identified natural disaster prevention and the environment as focal areas for bilateral cooperation. His Excellency further indicated that Japan has decided to continue extending cooperation in these areas to Trinidad and Tobago despite this country’s graduation to a high income level country.
Commenting on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council, Minister Moses assured Minister Sonoura of Trinidad and Tobago’s continued support to Japan concerning their position on the reform of this body. In turn, His Excellency expressed Japan’s appreciation for Trinidad and Tobago’s endorsement and indicated Japan’s readiness to work together with the Caribbean and African countries on text based negotiations within the United Nations Friendship Group in New York in 2018.
The meeting ended cordially with both parties committing to continued cooperation on mutually agreed matters.
