Minister Moses attends the High Level Segment of the 71st Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly and Related Meetings

PORT OF SPAIN: 22ND SEPTEMBER, 2016

Senator the Honourable Dennis Moses, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs on September 21, 2016 attended the High-Level Event on the Entry-into-Force of the Paris Climate Agreement. The event was convened by His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in the interest of building momentum toward the early entry-into-force of the Agreement before its scheduled date of 2020.

The Minister also attended other meetings on September 21, 2016 which included the General Debate during the morning period where world leaders delivered their respective national statements that were relevant to the theme of this year’s Debate: “The Sustainable Development Goals: A Universal Push to Transform Our World”.

Senator Moses also engaged in a number of bilateral and regional meetings on matters of interest to Trinidad and Tobago. He met with Dr. Sarah Seawall, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights of the United States of America State Department, on matters of mutual interest to Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.

Meetings were also held with Ambassador Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States and with Mr. Ali Moshiri, President of Chevron Africa and Latin America Exploration and Production.

In accordance with Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to CARICOM regionalism and the advancement of shared regional positions, the Minister joined his regional counterparts in participating in bilateral meetings between CARICOM, and the United Kingdom, Japan and the United Arab Emirates, respectively.

Minister Moses also attended a reception hosted by the Prime Minister of Japan followed by a reception for the Forum of Small States (FOSS) and Friends of FOSS, which was hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore.

The Foreign Minister will continue to be actively engaged in activities convened over the course of the High-Level Segment of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, including participation in meetings of the Council of Foreign and Community Relations of CARICOM, discussions between CARICOM and Mexico, and also a proposed bilateral meeting with his counterpart from the Republic of Ghana. The apex of his participation during this High-Level Segment, would be his delivery of the National Statement of Trinidad and Tobago to the General Assembly on the morning of September 26, 2016.

The General Debate of the General Assembly has been providing an opportunity for Senator the Honourable Dennis Moses, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, to meet with Heads of State and Government and other high ranking officials.
