MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS AND THE AMBASSADOR OF GERMANY DISCUSS COLLABORATION IN THE MULTILATERAL SPHERE

The Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, met with His Excellency Dr. Christophe Eick, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, to discuss matters of mutual interest. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s headquarters on 2nd April, 2025.

One matter of priority discussed was the pursuit by both countries of non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2027–2028. Ambassador Eick expressed appreciation to Minister Browne for the opportunity to engage in dialogue about Germany’s candidacy and also acknowledged Trinidad and Tobago’s campaign for a seat on the UNSC. He emphasized Germany’s desire to collaborate closely with Trinidad and Tobago in amplifying the voices of non-permanent members on the Council.

Minister Browne welcomed Ambassador Eick’s support and underscored that Trinidad and Tobago’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York has been leading the country’s campaign efforts. He further stated that as the campaign progresses, the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs will expand its engagement. Minister Browne noted that serving on the UNSC presents a valuable opportunity for Small Island States like Trinidad and Tobago, to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security.

Both countries have been non-permanent members of the UNSC previously, Trinidad and Tobago from 1985 to 1986 and Germany, on six occasions, the last of which was from 2019 to 2020. Among the key areas of mutual interest for Trinidad and Tobago and Germany are the situation in Haiti, climate change and the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and collaboration within multilateral fora.
