MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS DELIVERS REMARKS AT THE LAUNCH OF THE UNITED NATIONS NETWORK FOR MIGRATION

Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, delivered remarks at the launch of the United Nations Network for Migration (UNNM) in Trinidad and Tobago. The launch took place on 17th October, 2022 at the Brix Hotel, Port of Spain.

The UNNM seeks to assist member states to implement the Global Compact on Migration, which addresses the challenges that migration presents and emphasizes the inherent complexity of migration and reinforces a whole of government and whole of society approach to effectively manage it. It also seeks to help governments capitalize on harnessing the benefits to advance the commitments espoused within the Sustainable Development Goals. The UNNM in Trinidad and Tobago aims to bring together the various resident United Nations Agencies to collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other key stakeholders.

In his statement at the launch event, Minister Browne indicated that migration in Trinidad and Tobago has been an ongoing phenomenon, and is the main contributing factor to the diversity that exist within our present day society. The Minister welcomed the UNNM initiative and stated that he looked forward to seeing its benefits such as capacity building, data collection and analysis and technical cooperation unfold with a view to better managing migration . The Honourable Minister also commended the efforts of Ms. Jewel Ali, Head of the International Organization for Migration in Port of Spain and her staff for the work that they do in Trinidad and Tobago.
