Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs leads TT delegation to 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

PORT OF SPAIN: 17TH SEPTEMBER, 2022

Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, will lead the delegation of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly which will be conducted at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York. The delegation will include His Excellency Dennis Francis, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, New York.

The General Assembly is the main policy-making organ of the United Nations and comprises 193 Member States which meet from September to December each year. It is through the General Assembly that the work of the United Nations to provide security for global economic and social development is effected. The theme of the 77th Session is “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges.”

Minister Browne is committed to using the opportunity of participation in the activities of the High-Level Week to work with Ambassador Francis to advance Trinidad and Tobago’s campaign for Presidency of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Some of the priority areas for Trinidad and Tobago which will be addressed during the 77th Session include the state of the global economy, COVID-19 recovery and emerging health issues, Climate Change, energy security, food security, the use of Information and Communications Technologies for criminal purposes, the illicit trade in small and light weapons, implementation of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Agenda, Sustainable Development and the 2030 Agenda, the Rights of Women and of the Child, and reform of the United Nations.

During his visit to the United Nations, the Honourable Minister will deliver the National Statement on behalf of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago at the General Debate, which marks the start of the Assembly, and he will be present during the deliveries of National Statements by the Heads of Delegation of other CARICOM Member States. Minister Browne will also participate in several high-level events and bilateral meetings including but not limited to the following:

- The Meeting for Foreign Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).

- A Bilateral Meeting with His Excellency Ramtane Lamamra, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of Algeria.

- The Meeting between the Foreign Ministers of CARICOM and of the Nordic Countries.

- A Bilateral Meeting with His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana.

- A Bilateral Meeting with His Excellency Carlos R. Faria Tortosa, Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs of Venezuela.

- The Special Meeting of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) Ministerial Council.

- The Meeting between COFCOR Ministers and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan.

- The official Signing Ceremony for the establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Bahrain.

- The Reception hosted by the President of the United States on the occasion of the 77th Session of the UNGA.

- A Meeting between COFCOR Ministers and the Minister of External Affairs of the Government of India, the Honourable Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

Further, Minister Browne will chair a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) in his capacity as President of the OACP Council of Ministers.

The Minister will return to Trinidad and Tobago on 27th September, 2022.
