Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs meets with Director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean

Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs met with Mr. Joni Musabayana who was appointed as the Director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Decent Work Team (DWT) and Office for the Caribbean, on 13th December, 2023 at the Ministry’s headquarters. The Office is based in Port of Spain.

Minister Browne welcomed Mr. Musabayana to Trinidad and Tobago and, referring to the strong leadership preceded him, highlighted the valuable contribution that the ILO has made over the years.

The Decent Work Team Trinidad and Tobago, provides high quality, timely and integrated technical support to Country Offices in the region in the design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCPs) as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCFs). In addition to other joint initiatives anchored in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and outcome-based work plans.

Mr. Musabayana expressed the view that the ILO has an important part to play in the coordination of standards within CARICOM. He also stated his intention to work closely with trade unions, noting that the role of mediator, facilitator and advisor would be critical to develop a labour market that is at peace with itself.

The meeting ended cordially with both Minister Browne and Mr. Musabayana expressing their eagerness to collaborate to identify and mobilize opportunities that can achieve decent work for all.
