Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs meets with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago

On Thursday, 09 November 2023, Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, met with His Excellency Dr. Christophe Nicolas Eick, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Trinidad and Tobago, at the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

The discussions centred on cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and Germany at the United Nations and other multilateral fora, as well as on contemporary issues of geopolitical importance.

Minister Browne and the Ambassador also discussed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including the welfare of hostages, some of whom are German.

In appreciating the role history has played in influencing domestic and foreign policy, Minister Browne underscored the need for consistency and credibility in the approach of the international community with respect to conflicts regardless of geographical location.

Both parties acknowledged the complexities of the issues and expressed hope for a two-state solution toward ending the cycle of violence.

Minister Browne then expressed appreciation for the sentiments of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier who recently apologised for the injustices committed by Germany against Tanzania during its colonial period. The Minister hoped that other countries in the developed world would also take accountability for the atrocities committed during their own chapters of colonialism. In this regard,

Ambassador Eick noted that accountability for past injustices was necessary for future harmony and cooperation.

Both parties looked forward to future discussions on major topical issues and to strengthened cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and Germany.
