Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, met with Ms. Zakiya Uzoma-Wadada, Executive Chair of the Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago and Vice Chair of the National Committee on Reparations, to discuss the upcoming launch of the United Nations’ Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025-2034). The launch, which is set to take place later in March, will highlight the UN’s commitment to justice, recognition and development for people of African descent worldwide. Minister Browne, who was invited to formally inaugurate the Decade, reaffirmed his support and acknowledged the significance of addressing historical injustices and advancing reparatory justice initiatives.

This global initiative presents an opportunity to strengthen national, regional and international efforts to eliminate racial discrimination, promote full and equal participation in all sectors of society as well as honour the contribution of people of African descent.

Discussions touched on the commemoration of Emancipation Day 2025 and the ongoing work of the National Committee on Reparations. As Trinidad and Tobago prepares to commemorate this landmark event, the nation reinforces its commitment to confronting the legacies of slavery and colonialism while championing human rights and social justice on a global stage.
