MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS WELCOMES HIS BRAZILIAN COUNTERPART TO CELEBRATE THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES

On January 21, 2025, Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, welcomed His Excellency Mauro Vieira, Minister of External Relations of the Federative Republic of Brazil, on an official visit. This visit took place during the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil.

In 1965, three years after gaining independence, Trinidad and Tobago became the first Anglophone Caribbean nation to formalise diplomatic relations with Brazil. A resident mission was established in Port of Spain, and Trinidad and Tobago reciprocated by establishing an Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil, in 1968.

This official visit commenced with a flag-raising ceremony at the Ministry’s headquarters, featuring the flags of both countries raised while their respective anthems were played by the Beetham Vibrations Steel Orchestra. Following this, both Foreign Ministers signed a Letter of Intent to prioritise cooperation and engagement toward finalising significant agreements related to Political Consultation, the Authorization of Gainful Employment for Dependents of Diplomatic and Consular Personnel, and Air Transport. This Letter of Intent embodies the shared aspirations of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Federative Republic of Brazil to foster a deeper, more dynamic bilateral partnership and advance common goals for the mutual benefit of their peoples. Subsequently, a bilateral meeting was held which further underscored the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations.

During the bilateral meeting the discussion centered on cooperation in the areas of agriculture; health, including vaccines and pharmaceuticals; energy, including renewal energy; security; COP 30, which will be held in Brazil in November 2025; the future of the OAS and recent developments in hemispheric affairs; Brazil’s presidency of BRICS in 2025; air services; culture; and sport.

Over the years, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil have collaborated some of these sectors and have signed bilateral agreements on energy, double taxation, air services, fishing, culture, visas, and technical, economic and commercial cooperation.
