Senator the Honourable Dennis Moses, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs extended on behalf of Dr. the Honourable Keith Rowley, Prime Minister and the Government and People of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, best wishes to Ambassador Dr. Lutz Herman Görgens, the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Germany on the observance of the National Day of Germany on 3rd October, 2016 at the residence of the German Ambassador.
During his statement, Minister Moses commended Germany for its generous acts and long-standing commitment not only to Trinidad and Tobago but also to CARICOM Member countries. Minister Moses highlighted the inherent vulnerabilities of Caribbean countries to the ubiquitous threats of natural disasters and climate change. He expressed appreciation for the donation of five mobile training units in March 2016 to the Department of Physics at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, through the German-sponsored Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance Project.
Minister Moses highlighted that “collaborative efforts extend beyond culture, to include areas such as education, health, sports, climate change management and renewable energy among others.” He also informed that an agreement was signed for the provision of products and services to enhance Germany’s Carnivals last year during the visit to Trinidad and Tobago by a delegation of German Carnival officials.
During his address, His Excellency Dr. Lutz Herman Görgens announced the nomination of a German Honorary Consul in Tobago to demonstrate the close relations between both countries. Ambassador Görgens enumerated a number of companies that demonstrate the scope of economic cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and Germany as key brands which have penetrated the local market and provided jobs in both countries.
Speaking on the sensitive issue of Europe’s migrant crisis, Ambassador Görgens stated that the “erection of new walls and fences was not an option” He affirmed that “Germans and Europeans can master the migration challenge through common policies and joint action.”
