OFFICIAL VISIT OF HIS EXCELLENCY PÉTER SZIJÁRTÓ, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE OF HUNGARY TO THE REPUBLIC OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, hosted His Excellency Peter Szijjartó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, on 17th April, 2024 at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

It was the first visit of a Hungarian Foreign Minister to Trinidad and Tobago since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Trinidad and Tobago on 5th June, 1975. The meeting between Minister Browne and Minister Szijjartó also marked the first time the Foreign Ministers of both countries interacted.

Foreign Minister Szijjartó and his delegation, which included Ms. Mónika Bartos, Member of the National Assembly of Hungary; His Excellency Balázs Heincz, Ambassador of Hungary to the Republic of Cuba; Mr. Lászlo Váradi, Deputy State Secretary; and Dr. Gyula Budai, Ministerial Commissioner, were welcomed to the Ministry with a Flag Raising Ceremony, which included the National Anthems of both countries being played on the National Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, the Steelpan.

Following the Flag Raising Ceremony, Minister Browne and his team met for bilateral consultations. A number of issues were discussed including similarities between Trinidad and Tobago and Hungary, the plans for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary, in 2025, of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Hungary, Energy Security, Migration and the Samoa Agreement.

During his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Minister Szijjartó and his delegation also engaged in meetings with the Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis, Minister of Sport and Community Development and the Honourable Stuart Young, Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries.
