Prime Minister Attends Closing of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)
After three days of intensive meetings and special-focus sessions, Dr the Honourable Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, attended the closing Executive Session of the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), held yesterday (November 29th) at the Radisson Golden Sands, Malta.
Commonwealth leaders have agreed on several issues which affect the grouping collectively and individually. Of particular importance was the establishment of the Commonwealth Countering Violent Extremism Unit, which has been mandated to advance the Commonwealth’s role in international efforts to counter extremism through civil society networks and education.
Members also welcomed the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development and re-affirmed their commitment to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Additionally, climate change was high on the 2015 CHOGM agenda. The leaders acknowledged that 31 of their members are small states which are particularly vulnerable to the challenges posed by climate change.
Corruption was also noted as a significant world challenge. In this regard, leaders agreed to work together to strengthen international, regional and national responses to corruption including enhanced transparency and collaboration among law enforcement bodies.
End.
