Dr. the Honourable Keith Rowley, Prime Minister, extended congratulations to the Prime Minister-elect of Canada, Mr. Justin Trudeau following the outcome of elections held in Canada on October 19, 2015 in which the Liberal Party, headed by Mr Trudeau, scored a convincing victory.
The Prime Minister referred to the strong ties which have existed between both countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962. Discussions ranged from issues of mutual interest on the bilateral agenda and collaboration in hemispheric and multilateral fora. Prime Minister Rowley also reinforced Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to building on the already existing good relations between both countries.
Trinidad and Tobago and Canada established diplomatic relations on August 31, 1962 and have engaged in cooperation initiatives in such areas as agriculture, corrections, education, energy, environmental management, health, mutual legal assistance, public sector modernisation and security. A number of bilateral agreements have been signed including the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Government of Canada on Development Cooperation in April 1991, as well as the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Government of Canada for Public Sector Modernisation in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, signed in May, 2012 on the occasion of the State Visit by Governor General Johnston. An Agreement on Air Transport was signed in June 2015. Investment and trade in goods and services between both countries is significant, with the area of financial services, as well as cooperation in the energy sector, showing particular dynamism.
