Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs on 26th November, 2024 welcomed His Excellency Zurab Mchedlishvili, Ambassador-designate of Georgia to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The Minister expressed optimism for the strengthening of ties between the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Georgia.
The Ambassador-designate’s visit to the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs took place prior to the Presentation of Credentials to Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo, O.R.T.T., President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
During the meeting Minister Browne conveyed his thanks for Georgia’s support for Trinidad and Tobago’s Resolution at the United Nations General Assembly, which resulted in August 11th being annually observed as World Steelpan Day. The Minister acknowledged Trinidad and Tobago’s support for Georgia’s annual United Nations Resolution on the “Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia,” which Trinidad and Tobago also co-sponsored, in 2021, 2023 and 2024.
Ambassador-designate Mchedlishvili in acknowledging the Minister’s sentiments and the importance of good relations with countries, advised of Georgia’s desire to establish an Honorary Consulate in Port of Spain. He also suggested that a high-level visit from Tbilisi to Port of Spain take place in the coming year, which would also incorporate political consultations.
Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Georgia were established on 8th April, 2011, when Ambassadors of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Georgia, signed a Joint Communiqué.
The Minister and the Ambassador undertook to use available opportunities to have further engagement on matters of mutual importance.
