The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs is pleased to join the national and international community in celebrating the adoption by consensus of the resolution entitled, “World Steelpan Day,” on 24 July 2023 at the United Nations, Headquarters in New York, which proclaimed 11 August as World Steelpan Day and resulted in the inclusion of this Day on the list of international days observed annually by the United Nations.
The adoption of the resolution on World Steelpan Day by the United Nations General Assembly is a fitting tribute to the creativity and resourcefulness of our People, who toiled tirelessly to earn the recognition of the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, the Steelpan, as the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the Twentieth Century.
In this context, the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM extends congratulations, on this momentous occasion, to all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago both at home and in the diaspora for this significant accomplishment. The Ministry welcomed the opportunity to work collaboratively with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Pan Trinbago, and all other stakeholders to bring the vision of the inclusion of World Steelpan Day on the list of international days observed annually by the United Nations to fruition. In this regard, the Ministry wishes to recognize and commend its staff at the Permanent Mission of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations in New York for its integral role that resulted in the adoption of the resolution.
The dedicated diplomats at the Permanent Mission drafted the concept note and the resolution as well as lobbied extensively to ensure that the text garnered in excess of eighty co-sponsors from a wide cross-section of Member States. The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs expresses its most profound gratitude and appreciation to the entire team, which has contributed to the current euphoria of national pride.
The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs looks forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that the legacy of World Steelpan Day is fulsomely upheld and observed annually on 11 August at the global level.
