Senator the Honourable Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs welcomed His Excellency Gerhard Doujak, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Trinidad and Tobago and conveyed the anticipation for continued collaboration between Trinidad and Tobago and Austria. These sentiments were expressed during a Courtesy Call by on the Minister by the Ambassador prior to the latter’s Presentation of Credentials to Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes, O.R.T.T., President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
During the brief Courtesy Call, Minister Browne and Ambassador Doujak reiterated Trinidad and Tobago’s and Austria’s commitment to working closely to deepen existing relations and to expand on cooperation in the areas of education, tourism and health. His Excellency noted Trinidad and Tobago and Austria’s mutual interests at the multilateral level and expressed his government’s hope that Trinidad and Tobago would be represented at the forthcoming First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear weapons (TPNW) which is scheduled to take place in Vienna, Austria from 21st to 23rd June 2022. Ambassador Doujak also raised the issue of the Russia/ Ukraine crisis and noted that all countries must work together to make the world a better and safer place.
The Honourable Minister noted that Trinidad and Tobago was keen to expand the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Austria in the area of health cooperation. Further, he commended Austria’s efforts in and contribution to the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the Minister highlighted and expressed appreciation for Austria’s intervention and efforts in attempting to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
The meeting ended cordially with both parties committing to strengthen the relations between the two countries on both the bilateral and multilateral levels. His Excellency is the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, with residence in Bogotá, Colombia. He is also the Austrian Ambassador to Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Barbados and Guyana and is accredited to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
