Trinidad and Tobago establishes Diplomatic relations with Nepal

In a simple and dignified ceremony, which took place at the premises of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, New York, on 16th June, 2022, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal formally established diplomatic relations, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961.

Signing the Joint Communiqué on behalf of Trinidad and Tobago was His Excellency Dennis Francis, Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, New York, and on behalf of Nepal, His Excellency Amrit Bahadur Rai, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, New York. Diplomatic staff of both Permanent Missions witnessed the historic occasion.

Prior to the signing ceremony, both Ambassadors met and acknowledged that their countries already enjoy a cooperative and friendly relationship at the United Nations and other multilateral fora, including as fellow members of the Group of 77, the largest bloc of developing countries, and the Non-Aligned Movement. They noted that, while both countries are geographically distant, Trinidad and Tobago and Nepal share significant philosophical, cultural and historical similarities, while also facing multiple, common challenges in achieving sustainable development. As such, the Permanent Representatives recognized the importance of intensifying their strategic collaboration at the United Nations as a means of overcoming these challenges for the betterment of both their peoples.

The Permanent Representatives agreed that the historical signing of diplomatic relations serves as a new chapter in a deepening relationship between the countries, and looked forward to the opportunities that exist for Trinidad and Tobago and Nepal to cooperate further on issues of vital importance to the survival and well-being of their respective countries, including, inter alia, international peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, culture and trade.
