TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO SENDS RELIEF ITEMS TO SURINAME FOLLOWING TORRENTIAL RAINS AND FLOODING

PORT OF SPAIN: 22ND JUNE, 2021

In response to a request by the Government of the Republic of Suriname, the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has dispatched relief supplies to Suriname following torrential rainfall and flooding experienced by that country in the months of April, May and June 2021. The widespread flooding resulted in the loss of homes and livelihoods and the displacement of thousands of people.

Relief items were transported on 22nd June, 2021 via a Caribbean Airlines aircraft leased by Suriname Airways. The items included garbage bags, baby food, face masks, long boots, mosquito nets, tarpaulin, cots and chargeable battery-operated lamps. Additional items such as water, hand sanitizer and water tanks will be provided later in the week and transported by sea.

Trinidad and Tobago is pleased to assist a fellow member of CARICOM and reiterates its commitment to supporting the Government and People of Suriname during this challenging time.
