The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs has been in direct contact with His Excellency Fitzgerald Jeffery, High Commissioner for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Jamaica. High Commissioner Jeffery has been communicating with Haitian Ambassador to CARICOM, His Excellency Peterson Noel about the safety and well-being of Trinidad and Tobago nationals in Haiti post Hurricane Matthew. Ambassador Noel reported that thus far there are no reported injuries or confirmed deaths of Trinidad and Tobago nationals in Haiti.
Ambassador Noel has advised that non-perishable food items, medical supplies and building materials are some of the items that are urgently required. 300 schools in Haiti were damaged during the passage of Hurricane Matthew and over 60,000 Haitians are now in shelters and some places are still in accessible in Haiti.
High Commissioner Jeffery has arranged for aid relief items which had been acquired in preparation for the passage of Hurricane Matthew over Jamaica to be shipped to Haiti. They consist of 25 cases of bottled water 300ml, 5 cases of corned beef, 3 cases of canned tuna, 3 cases of baked beans, 5 cases of vienna sausages and 10 boxes of crackers. Regular contact will be maintained with Ambassador Noel.
The Ministry wishes to remind nationals to register with the Registration System for Nationals Abroad (RSNA) via register.foreign.gov.tt when travelling overseas.
