On 25th February 2022, a virtual Meeting was held between Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, and Mrs. Vicky Ford MP, Minister for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
At the outset, Minister Ford expressed appreciation for the strong statements issued by Minister Browne, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and those of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), concerning the situation in Ukraine and for holding Russia accountable for its actions.
In response, Minister Browne took the opportunity to congratulate the Minister with responsibility for Latin America and the Caribbean on her expanded role and assured her of his commitment to working closely with her. He then highlighted the strong partnership between the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago, which is underpinned by the common respect and regard for international law.
Minister Browne reiterated the clear position of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago that Russia’s action, over the past few days, was a violation of international law as it threatened the sovereignty of Ukraine. He also underscored that Trinidad and Tobago stands in solidarity with the global community and will lend its voice to this situation that threatens international peace and security.
The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote on 25 February 2022, on a draft Resolution calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, and the possible need for intervention of the United Nations General Assembly. In this regard, Minister Ford implored that the global community needed to support this Resolution.
Minister Browne assured that the Trinidad and Tobago Permanent Representative to the United Nations has been mandated to ensure that the position of Trinidad and Tobago on this situation is clearly articulated.
