MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS MEETS WITH HIS EXCELLENCY ANDERS BENGTCÉN, AMBASSADOR OF SWEDEN

On 4th April 2025, the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, welcomed His Excellency Anders Bengtcén, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Ambassador Bengtcén was accompanied by Sweden’s Honorary Consuls in Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. David O’Brien and Ms. Teija Maritta De Silva, respectively.

Minister Browne expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to engage with Ambassador Bengtcén and reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. Discussions covered key issues, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The Swedish Ambassador offered Sweden’s gratitude to Trinidad and Tobago for its principled positions related to the ongoing war, while the Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs maintained that the circumstances of the hostilities continue to be troubling. He stressed that Trinidad and Tobago will continue to advocate for “hard work, diplomacy and pragmatism.”

The Minister and the Ambassador also discussed regional issues, including the ongoing crisis in Haiti and preparations for the upcoming 2025 EU-CELAC Summit. The meeting concluded on a positive note with both parties reaffirming their commitment to enhanced collaboration on the international stage.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Kingdom of Sweden were established in July 1966.
