MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS MEETS WITH HIS EXCELLENCY WU WEIHUA, VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE STANDING COMMITTEE OF THE NATIONAL PEOPLE’S CONGRESS OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, held discussions with His Excellency Wu Weihua, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, during a meeting on 11th November 2024, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

His Excellency Wu is leading a delegation on a two-day visit to Trinidad and Tobago at the invitation of the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

During the meeting, Minister Browne reflected on the longstanding friendship between Trinidad and Tobago and China and the diplomatic relationship based on Trinidad and Tobago’s adherence to the One China Policy.

Discussions also focused on the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Trinidad and Tobago and China, which is being commemorated in 2024 and was identified as an opportunity to enhance cooperation between the countries. Both Minister Browne and His Excellency agreed that the Phoenix Park Industrial Estate, a project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, to which Trinidad and Tobago was the first signatory from the English-speaking Caribbean, stood as a positive example of excellent and productive relations between both countries.

Minister Browne also emphasized Trinidad and Tobago’s shared values such as an emphasis on multilateralism, global peace and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, the rules of international law and respect for the United Nations system.

Additionally, His Excellency made several proposals for strengthening the bilateral relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and China, including the continued promotion of people-to-people exchanges in the field of education and in the area of tourism.

The meeting ended cordially with both parties agreeing that there is great potential for further collaboration between Trinidad and Tobago and China, to which both sides remain committed.
