Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, met with The Rt. Honourable Patricia Scotland KC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth on 12th June, 2023 at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.
Minister Browne warmly welcomed The Rt. Honourable Patricia Scotland to Trinidad and Tobago and emphasized the strong and vibrant relationship that this country has with the Commonwealth. He expressed the commitment of Trinidad and Tobago to the continuation of a fruitful collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat. Additionally, the Minister congratulated the Secretary-General for her leadership of the organization, which he sees as integral to its success for the benefit of Member States.
During the meeting, discussions were held on Climate Change, Trade, the Commonwealth Universal Vulnerability Index and the Commonwealth Secretariat’s thrust in the area of Artificial Intelligence which has the potential to assist Commonwealth Small States in building domestic transformative technologies that will strengthen their economic resilience, mitigate climate change and equip their workforces with new skills.
Minister Browne referred to Trinidad and Tobago’s hosting of the upcoming Seventh Commonwealth Youth Games which will take place during the period 4th to 11th August, 2023. In this regard, the Minister linked Trinidad and Tobago’s hosting of the Commonwealth Youth Games with the declaration by Commonwealth Heads of 2023 as a year dedicated to youth-led action for sustainable and inclusive development.
The meeting ended cordially with Minister Browne reaffirming Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to the Commonwealth.
