Minister Of Foreign And CARICOM Affairs Participates In Europe Day Celebrations

Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs delivered remarks on the occasion of the celebration of Europe Day on Tuesday 9th May, 2023. The event was hosted by His Excellency Peter Cavendish, Ambassador of the European Union to Trinidad and Tobago.

In his statement, Ambassador Cavendish recounted the long-standing relationship and history of cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and Europe. Remarking on development cooperation programmes, the Ambassador cited digital technologies as one of the success stories from the investment in this country.

In response, Minister Browne underscored the value of the relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and the EU, which he described as a “sustained development partnership.” Minister Browne indicated that the Trinidad and Tobago–European Union relationship was built on and continues to strive in areas of critical importance to the society, including agriculture, digital transformation, education, health and national security. The Minister expressed appreciation for the Technical Assistance Grant Funding provided by the EU and commended Ambassador Cavendish and the EU Delegation for the respectful and pragmatic ways in which they have engaged with this country.

In the midst of the celebratory atmosphere, the Minister reminded those present of the European Union’s founding principles of peace and solidarity and the need to revisit and re-emphasise the merits of political and diplomatic initiatives to resolve the ongoing conflict since the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.

In closing, the Minister offered a toast for the peace and prosperity of the European Union.
