Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs participated in the Pope’s Day Celebration commemorating the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul at the Apostolic Nunciature on Thursday 29 June 2023.
During his welcome, His Excellency the Most Reverend Archbishop Santiago de Wit Guzmán, Ambassador, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See (Vatican), remarked that Trinidad and Tobago and the Holy See enjoy long and cordial diplomatic relations and that there are many similarities including the fact that both countries are considered Small States. He offered the ongoing cooperation of the Apostolic Nunciature in working together to peacefully address the challenges of crime and injustice, which are being faced by the Trinidad and Tobago society.
In response, Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs expressed the gratitude of Trinidad and Tobago to the Apostolic Nunciature for preserving the legacy of the Chancery’s original resident, Trinidad and Tobago’s first Prime Minister, the late Dr. Eric Eustace Williams.
Minister Browne also noted that for states, small size should never be an impediment to being heard. On some of the international conflicts which are now taking centre stage, the Minister said that his message will always be that peace is critical to the achievement of prosperity, progress and sustainability.
It is in this vein that Minister Browne, in noting the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), stressed that the Caribbean Sea must be preserved and reserved as a Zone of Peace. He also remarked that one of the standard bearers and flagships of peace and spiritual values must be recognized as the Diplomatic Missions of the Holy See and saluted the work of the Apostolic Nuncio to spearhead this mission of peace, must be recorded.
