“Trinidad and Tobago remains resolute in its positions that Cuba be de-listed as a ‘State Sponsor of Terrorism’ and that the Embargo against Cuba be lifted.” These sentiments were expressed by Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs during a meeting with His Excellency Gustavo Daniel Véliz Olivares, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba on 17th June 2024, at the Ministry’s headquarters. The Minister firmly indicated that the situation of the unilateral and unfair classification of Cuba as a “State Sponsor of Terrorism” remains of significance to the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The Minister also noted that these positions had been articulated consistently by Trinidad and Tobago in various fora including at the United Nations, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). He further acknowledged that the restrictions against Cuba continued to impact the trade relations of the country and consequently, the lives of the Cuban people in a detrimental manner. Ambassador Véliz extended his sincere gratitude for Trinidad and Tobago’s solidarity with Cuba.
Discussions during the meeting also focused on key areas of bilateral engagement namely, cooperation in Health, Scholarships, Trade and possible areas of assistance to Cuba. Minister Browne took the opportunity to note the high value that Trinidad and Tobago placed on its relationship with Cuba and expressed appreciation for the demonstrations of kindness by the Cuban people, particularly in the healthcare sector. The meeting ended with both Minister Browne and Ambassador Véliz sharing positive sentiments on the bilateral relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba going forward.
