Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs received a Courtesy Call from Her Excellency María Cristina Pérez Gutiérrez, Ambassador-designate of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on 17th September, 2024 at the headquarters of Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.
The courtesy call took place prior to the Ambassador-designate’s presentation of her Letters of Credence to Her Excellency Christine Kangaloo O.R.T.T., President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
Minister Browne welcomed the Ambassador-designate to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and highlighted the strong level of engagement between the two countries, especially given the advocacy undertaken by Spain for issues germane to the interests of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.
Ambassador Pérez Gutiérrez expressed gratitude to the Minister for the warm reception, and informed that Spain’s foreign policy is undergirded by mutual respect and a wider thrust to recast its relationship with the region. The Ambassador-designate indicated that Spain intended to solidify its relationship with Trinidad and Tobago and the Region through interaction in the framework of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). The Ambassador-designate revealed that Spain recognises Trinidad and Tobago as a pivotal actor in the region and beyond. CELAC and Ibero American Conferences, for example, provide opportunities for Spanish interventions in the areas of Financing for Development, Climate Financing, Technical Cooperation and Cultural Outreach.
The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Government of the Kingdom of Spain have enjoyed 57 years of diplomatic relations. Her Excellency María Cristina Pérez Gutiérrez is the first woman to be appointed by the Kingdom of Spain to head the Embassy in Port of Spain, which was established in Port of Spain in 2006.
