MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND CARICOM AFFAIRS MEETS WITH THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA TO THE REPUBLIC OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, met with Her Excellency Sonya Koppe, High Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Australia to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, during a Courtesy Call today, Wednesday 19th April, 2023 at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

It was the first formal meeting between Minister Browne and Her Excellency, since the High Commissioner presented her Letters of Credence to Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes, O.R.T.T., then President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, on 16th March, 2023.

During the meeting Minister Browne and High Commissioner Koppe reflected on recent events in their respective countries, including the Regional Symposium: Violence as a Public Health Issue – the Crime Challenge, held in Trinidad and Tobago from April 17th to 18th, 2023. Minister Browne acknowledged that the event had exceeded expectations in terms of stakeholder participation, substantive engagement and output.

The wide-ranging discussions also included the ongoing collaboration between Trinidad and Tobago and Australia in the fields of maritime transport and energy, commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Australia in 2024, candidatures, climate change and the energy transition.

The meeting ended cordially with Minister Browne and High Commissioner Koppe agreeing to continue exploring additional areas of bilateral cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and Australia.
