Steelpan played on the Great Wall of China

As part of its activities to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Trinidad and Tobago and China, the Trinidad and Tobago Embassy in Beijing was pleased to collaborate with Kuaishou (a major Chinese social media company) and Huawei Technologies to facilitate the production of a special video of the steelpan being played on the Great Wall of China.

The video, shot on 17th June, 2024, features a performance by visiting Trinidad and Tobago steelpannist - Mr. Joshua Regrello, of a medley of the Chinese classic “茉莉花 Jasmine Flower” and the 2024 Trinidad and Tobago Road March winner “DNA” by Mical Teja, on the Badaling Pass of the Great Wall in Beijing. The special video celebrates the rich cultural exchanges between Trinidad and Tobago and China through the most iconic cultural symbols of both countries, connecting for the very first time.

On 19th June, 2024, Mr. Regrello also visited the Embassy to engage with music enthusiasts in China, highlighting the history and development of the steelpan, as well as the instrument‘s musicality and range.
